Frequently Asked Questions
What is the effectiveness of acupuncture? How many sessions are needed for a given health issue? How is a treatment plan formed?
Acupuncture is widely regarded as a beneficial therapy for a broad range of health concerns. Its effects are cumulative, meaning that improvements build over time. While some patients experience noticeable relief after the first session, most conditions, especially those that have developed gradually, require a series of treatments to achieve lasting results.
Acute issues, such as recent injuries or sudden pain, often respond more quickly and may require fewer visits, sometimes even one visit. Chronic or long-standing conditions typically need more frequent and consistent care. The treatment plan, including the recommended modalities, duration, and frequency of sessions, is tailored to whether the condition is acute or chronic and to how the body responds over time.
What should I do to prepare before coming to the appointment?
To help you feel comfortable and to ensure the best possible treatment experience, please take a moment to prepare before your visit:
- Shower beforehand, and arrive with clean skin and hair, clean socks, and clean shoes.
- Avoid applying lotions, oils, perfumes, or hair products.
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to areas commonly treated, such as arms, legs, neck, and back.
- Make sure you have eaten a light meal and drank some water before your session. Being overly hungry or thirsty can make you feel lightheaded during treatment.
What sensations can I expect during an acupuncture session?
Acupuncture is generally a very comfortable experience, and most points create little to no pain. During the insertion or gentle adjustment of the needles, you may notice mild sensations such as a slight ache or soreness, a brief and light pinch, a feeling of heaviness or fullness, numbness or tingling, or a warm or "electric" sensation. These responses are normal and often indicate that the acupuncture point is being activated.
You should always feel at ease during your session. If any sensation becomes sharp, lingering, or distracting, please let your acupuncturist know right away so adjustments can be made. Your comfort is important. If you feel too warm, too cold, or experience any other discomfort at any point, please inform your acupuncturist so the environment can be adjusted to help you relax fully.
What are some side effects of acupuncture?
Acupuncture is widely considered a safe and low-risk therapy. Most patients find it relaxing and experience minimal discomfort. As with any medical procedure, some mild side effects may occur, but they typically resolve on their own within a few days. These may include mild bruising, temporary numbness, tingling, soreness, or a feeling of heaviness near the needle sites, as well as brief lightheadedness or dizziness.
Cupping may leave temporary circular marks, and in rare cases may cause small blisters. Heat-based therapies may lead to mild skin irritation or, very rarely, a minor burn. Tui-Na involves firm pressure and manual techniques, and may result in slight soreness, tenderness, or minor bruising in the areas treated. Our clinic uses sterile, single-use needles and follows strict safety and sanitation protocols to minimize risk. Please communicate with your acupuncturist promptly about your health experiences before, during, and after treatment.
